good summary of the current situation:

In May, Thailand extended visas for self-employed remote workers from 60 days to five years, with each stay limited to 180 days, also allowing visa holders to bring spouses and children. Indonesia has offered a one-year temporary residence permit for remote workers. The Philippines has promised to introduce a digital nomad visa this year.
But for those able to rock up on a tourist visa, formal applications were not worth the effort, Wong said. “Why go through an application process that requires forms, evidence of employment, bank statements that take time to complete and months to approve when I could be on my next flight to Bangkok tomorrow morning?” she said.

It’s true but honestly you could have written this article every single year for the past 10-15 and it would still be mostly on point. Thailand has always been a top destination and their visa system has been a nightmare since what… the 1990s? or longer? from what I hear. If anything some countries have gotten easier since that time, like Vietnam or Malaysia.

Other countries have gotten worse in the past few years though, like Vietnam used to have 1 year visa option, but after COVID it was only 30 days for a long time but they finally added 90 days recently. And Philippines used to be 6 months for Americans visa-free, but that’s long gone.

“Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia have managed to attract crowds of digital nomads for as long as this lifestyle existed. Here are some of the reasons why.”
